An Exclusive Interview with Hanif Sanket
Hanif Sanket is a renowned media personality in Bangladesh, best known for his iconic creation, "Ityadi." This magazine-style TV show has remained at the top for over three decades. Every Eid, "Ityadi" brings a special episode, and this year is no exception. Besides his contribution to television, Sanket is also a celebrated playwright, producing dramas exclusively for special occasions. Recently, he sat down with Jugantor to discuss "Ityadi" and his journey in media. The interview was conducted by F. I. Dipu.
The Secret Behind "Ityadi's" Long-Standing Popularity
"There is no hidden secret. Our dedication, hard work, creativity, and honesty in content production are the key factors. We carefully craft the show, keeping our audience in mind. To deliver the best, we focus on quality. Our goal is not just publicity but to win the hearts of our viewers. I believe 'Ityadi' has become a part of every family."
Overcoming Challenges While Running "Ityadi"
"I have faced numerous obstacles and pressures but never surrendered. Different government committees imposed restrictions over time. Unlike private TV channels that review their own programs, BTV had an external preview committee despite having highly skilled professionals. This practice continued for 16 years and still exists, even under the new government. The necessity of such a committee should be reconsidered. However, I have never encountered a situation so significant that it became a deeply painful memory."
Showcasing Unsung Heroes Through "Ityadi"
"Many people in our society work selflessly for others, but they are rarely recognized. To highlight such individuals, one needs a keen eye and willingness to explore. We travel across the country to find and present these inspiring stories in 'Ityadi,' hoping to motivate others."
The Degradation of Language and Content in Modern Entertainment
"Today, art and culture are more commercialized than ever. Many channels, artists, and directors focus more on profit than creativity. This shift has led to a decline in quality, with vulgar language and inappropriate scenes becoming common. Instead of finding solutions, more web series, dramas, and films are normalizing offensive dialogues. Unfortunately, even intellectuals are endorsing this trend. It is alarming how society is being desensitized."
Controversy Over a Skit Not Airing on BTV
"A recent 'Ityadi' skit, which strongly condemned misinformation and propaganda against Bangladesh, was cut from BTV’s broadcast but gained immense appreciation on YouTube. It raises concerns about the decision-making process within BTV."
How Long Will "Ityadi" Continue?
"As long as the audience wants it and I am physically able, I will continue. 'Ityadi' has thrived for 36 years because of the viewers' love and support. As long as they appreciate it, I will keep producing it."
Limited Drama Productions Despite High Demand
"Unlike many others, I do not treat media as a business. I could have produced multiple dramas each month, but a single episode of 'Ityadi' takes two to three months to complete. Since it includes drama, songs, dance, social reports, quizzes, and documentaries, I prioritize it over frequent drama productions. My aim is to create content that families can watch together."
Any Plans for Directing a Movie?
"Most well-known television presenters worldwide, like Larry King, Oprah Winfrey, and David Letterman, have not ventured into filmmaking. Hosting and filmmaking are distinct professions requiring unique expertise. My focus is on showcasing good-hearted individuals and contributing to social change. I have no immediate plans to direct a film. However, the future will decide what I do next."
Advice for the Younger Generation
"The youth are the future of our society. Through 'Ityadi,' I have highlighted their achievements multiple times. I am always optimistic about young people. I believe they will take responsibility, eliminate corruption, and help Bangladesh reach new heights."
